How often should my dog be groomed?

Frequency of grooming depends on the breed, coat type and length, lifestyle and how much brushing and detangling you do at home between grooming appointments. If your dog has a longer hair style or a coat that tends to get tangled, they should be professionally groomed every 4-6 weeks. A dog with a short hair style or short coat can be groomed every 6 - 8 weeks.

Should I have my dog groomed in the winter?

Yes, grooming is a year round process. Some people prefer to let their dog's fur grow longer during the winter months. Longer fur has a greater chance of developing matts and tangles. Matts do not allow for proper airflow through the coat and this can lead to health problems and pain. Short haired breeds also need attention in the colder months. Pet skin can become dry and flaky due to a lack of humidity in the colder air. Regular shampooing, conditioning and brushing can help stimulate the natural oils to ease the dryness.

How can shedding be reduced?

Shedding can be reduced by 60 to 80% after 1 to 2 applications of a shed-less treatment. A shed-less treatment consists of a specially formulated de-shedding shampoo followed by the application of a de-shedding solution. A special tool is then used to remove the undercoat and loose fur.

When should my puppy have its first professional grooming?

Grooming on your pup should start at 10 weeks of age (after second vaccination), to let the pup become acquainted with the sounds of the studio environment, noises such as dryers, clippers and other dogs etc. We will teach your pup and you the proper way to brush and handle your puppy.
It is very important to start them early. We recommend a grooming session every month for the first 4 months. With both you and your groomer working hand in hand doing the same things at home as the groomer would in the studio the pup will take everything around him or her in stride and make it a pleasant experience and not a traumatic one, this in turn makes grooming your pet at home easy for your pup, you and the groomer.

What type of brush should I be using on my dog?

This depends on the breed and coat type of your dog. We would be happy to give you a personalized recommendation and a demonstration of proper brushing techniques for your dogs specific coat type.

Can I watch while my pet is being groomed?

We prefer not to have the owners stay while their pet is being groomed, as we find the pet’s to be extremely distracted and sometimes even stressed. Our goal is to provide your pet with our full attention, and in order to safely groom your pet, we need to have their full attention as well.

Do you tranquilize or sedate pets?

No, absolutely no tranquilizers or sedatives are used by the groomer.

Do you groom cats?

Yes! We offer both bath only or full haircut options for cats. We don’t generally like to shave cats unless they are matted. Occasionally, cats will not tolerate certain parts of the grooming process. Complete completion of the groom may not be possible in these cases. We do the best we can/the most they will let us!! Please call for more info on cat grooming.

How long does it take for my pet to be groomed?

Dogs that do not get haircuts can generally be done within an hour. Small dogs who do get clipped take about an hour and a half. Large dogs who get clipped take about two hours. This time frame can vary due to the coat condition and the behavior of your pet.

What are mats, and what does it mean when you say my pet is matted?

A mat is a tangled mass of hair all clumped together. The tighter the mat, the more difficult it is to brush out. The typical mat consists of numerous coarse guard hairs that crisscross one another. These guard hairs often end up catching and holding loose hairs from the undercoat. One of the reasons mats become so dense is that undercoat grows faster than the guard coat. Once tangles occur in the guard coat, the undercoat packs up very tightly. Dirt, static and moisture are other factors that cause matting. If a pet is not brushed on a regular basis, any kind of moisture – bathing, swimming or a run through the snow can make it impossible to remove the mats from the coat. In these cases the only option is to shave the mats out. Mats may also cause fungal infections and sores because their skin doesn’t have a chance to breathe. Mats can also cause your pet a lot of pain, and even cause bruising. As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to care for your dog in between groom appointments and to brush your pet on a regular basis. If you are not sure how to properly maintain your furry friend’s coat, please ask us and we will be happy to show you!

Does my pet need to be current on vaccines?

Yes, we require proof of vaccination at time of grooming. Please bring a copy of your vaccine list to your first appointment. We will make record of the expiry dates so you don’t have to bring your records to every appointment.

Will you shave down my double coated (ie. Golden, Husky, Pomeranian)?

No. Most people think that it is OK to shave down a double coated breed because it will help reduce shedding or it will keep your dog cool in the summer time. Unfortunately, this is not true. A dog’s coat is an important system of his/her body. It forms a physical barrier between the environment and the skin. Dogs don’t perspire through their fur; they perspire through their tongues and foot pads. Double coated breeds have guard hairs as well as an under coat. The guard hairs usually lie across the top of the body forming a protective layer of hair over the under coat. Shaving the guard hairs exposes the undercoat which cannot adequately protect the skin against the suns harmful UV rays which can lead to your dog having severe sunburn. Not only that, but the hair may not grow back in the way it’s designed to. For these reasons and more, we will not shave double coated dogs.

How often should my dogs nail be cut?

We recommend getting your dogs nails cut about once a month. This will ensure that the nails will not become over grown. Once a month clippings will make the quicks (veins in the nail) recede and allow us to eventually get cut the nails shorter. Dremmeling is recommended for those who want to get their nails as short as possible.

My dog has really dry skin. What can you do?

Along with our specialty shampoos for dry skin, we offer a deep penetrating aloe remoisturizing treatment. We have found that it works amazingly well, and almost completely fixes dry skin problems after the first treatment! In certain cases, we have even seen it help with hair regrowth in balding areas caused by severe dry skin. Make sure to ask for this treatment if your pet has dry skin!
